Exceptional Marketing:
Royal Caribbean Packs Your Bags
for a Personalized Vacation

Royal Caribbean, Big Spaceship, and Arnold Worldwide joined forces to make a travel and tourism site unlike anything else on the net.

With the help of their "vacation personality expert" Sammy the Suitcase (joining the likes of The Roaming Gnome and William Shatner, the Priceline negotiator), you can pick your favorite activities and get guidance on what cruise package would best suit you.

Once you visit the site, you immediately understand why it won the Best Motion Graphics award at the 2007 SXSW Interactive Festival. Sammy gobbles up countless items -- surfboards, tuxedos, spicy foods…mountains -- and based on three categories of relaxation, adventure, and culture, chooses which vacation is best for you. You can slide from the bedroom to the kitchen to find things that suit your vacation style, and at the end of it all, Sammy serenades you with the vacation you chose. The graphics and transitions are flawless and get you into the spirit of planning your dream cruise.

Once a vacation is chosen for you, the companies supply all the tools to help you on your way. You can also watch funny videos of Sammy on vacation; you can design a date for Sammy, participate in his sing-along songs, or listen to what he has on his voicemail.

Sooner or later, I'll have some time to get away, and when I do, I'm turning to Sammy the Suitcase to pack my days full of fun.

Exhibitry's Life Cycle

When determining the worth of your exhibit, it's important to understand its "life cycle.”

This term means different things to different people - especially to marketing people and accounting people. From a marketing perspective, the life cycle of an exhibit may be calculated by season. To the accounting mind, "life cycle" refers to the length of time over which an exhibit will depreciate.

In corporate America, exhibits are often classified as fixed assets and carry a straight-line five-year depreciation curve. This depreciation curve also determines the "book value" of the property. In fast-moving industries (such as high-tech), a five-year accounting life cycle may not be appropriate. In these instances, a shorter depreciation curve should be used.

Critical Paperwork For Shows

No, you can't haul your whole file cabinet to a show.

So, here are the critical files that should go with you.

  1. The exhibitor's manual, which gives you information on show rules and key show management contacts.
  2. A copy of the original booth space contract, confirming booth location and charges.
  3. Phone numbers of key contacts (including after-hours numbers for emergencies). Bring phone numbers for people from your display house, transportation company and setup firm, as well as any other important suppliers.
  4. Paperwork documenting special arrangements, such as permission for using an independent contractor or for early move-in.
  5. Proof of payment for shows, including copies of checks and credit card receipts.
  6. Copies of all service order forms. That way, if the supplier misplaces your order, you can prove your advance order and avoid paying at-show rates.
  7. A copy of your shipping schedule. Include origin and destination points, piece counts, arrival dates, phone numbers, and charges.
  8. An inventory of the contents of each crate, total crate count, and records of any identifying markings on the crates.
  9. A duplicate set of setup drawings, in case the originals disappear.
  10. Photographs of your exhibit to serve as visual aids for the setup crew.

Step up to the Bar

Because kiosk-based software demos are as common as Paris Hilton sightings, database and integration-software company InterSystems Corp. worked with robotics company Motoman Inc. to build a drink-serving robot that demonstrated the capabilities of its Ensemble software.

Attendees at the 2006 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society show used a computer kiosk loaded with InterSystems' software to enter their contact information and place a drink order, picking from a selection of mixers, juice, and ice/no ice options. The order was transferred via an Ensemble-generated Web page to the RoboBar "bartender" adjacent to the kiosk, which poured each drink as specified.

The software also demonstrated Ensemble's business-rules engine, database, and inventory-control features as it tracked how many drinks each attendee ordered, and cut attendees off at two drinks apiece.
