Always Be Prepared

It's the day before a show, and your exhibit is ready for the final touch - the graphic panels.

You find the large cardboard box that the new graphics were shipped in, pull out the graphics, and discover there were two holes the size of your fist through every panel. Turns out some gentle, caring forklift driver had skewered your graphics panels.

Skewered, chipped, bent, or even lost graphics have been the source of numerous panic attacks on the show floor. Luckily, technological advances are making it easier to reproduce ruined graphics (or at least create passable replacements) on the fly. But you still need to plan ahead if you hope to survive unscathed, so here are some tips to help you prepare for the worst.

  1. Always have your graphics designer put all show graphics on a CD that you have in your possession at the show in case you need to reproduce or change them on site.
  2. Know who in a show city can produce last-minute graphics, such as the show's general services contractor or a 24-hour printer such as Kinko's. Consider making a list of such places for each city you regularly exhibit in - or ask your exhibit house / graphics supplier to compile a list for you.
  3. Spend the extra money on sturdy shipping cases made of durable plastic or wood, and use lots of bubble wrap to protect your booth graphics and signage.

Calling All Leads...

Let the contacts you made at the trade show know they haven't been forgotten with ListeNation Corp.'s Prerecorded Follow-up System. With the PFS automated call system, booth visitors find thank-you messages from your sales force in their voicemail when they return to the office after the show.

When they return the calls, they are connected with a live salesperson ready to do business. For those attendees who don't return the call, a second prerecorded message goes out a week after the show, and a third call goes out the following week thanking non-responsive leads for their interest.

When the Ford Motor Co. displayed the Ford Lincoln Futura concept car in its exhibit at the 1955 Chicago Auto show, it only hoped to accelerate consumer interests in its line.

Built by hand in Italy for $250,000, the Futura was never mass produced.  The model used in the exhibit was eventually sold to famed car customizer George Barris.  When producers for a new TV show in 1965 asked Barris to build a vehicle for its villain-vanquishing star, he reshaped the Futura's nose and tail, painted it a velvet-textured black, and created the now legendary Batmobile.

A Train from L.A. to Vegas
in the Cards?

Plans for a passenger train from Las Vegas to Anaheim, Calif., have been on the drawing board for years. Amtrak last made the trip in 1997, when the rails were shut down due to low demand.

On June 6, President George Bush signed a transportation bill that would award $45 million to study a MagLev (magnetic levitation) train system for the 250-mile desert trek.

The train would be capable of traveling at 300 mph and would make the trip in under two hours. This would also be the first system of its kind operating in the United States.
